Program Introduction

The M.A. program in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) offers a path to further studies in English language education and business communication in English. Since 2022, the program has established two curriculum tracks for the MA degree: (1) TESOL and (2) EBP (English for Business Purposes). The TESOL Track aims to enrich students’ understanding in language pedagogy and to develop their language teaching skills and use of educational technology. The EBP Track aims to enrich students’ understanding in cross-cultural communication in business contexts and to develop their business communication skills and strategies in English. Students can choose to concentrate their studies in one of the two tracks.

The program provides a well-designed systematic curriculum. The required courses for both tracks are Research Methods, Research Writing, Academic Presentation Skills, and Thesis. In addition, students are required to take one of the two advanced research methods courses: Statistics and Measurement or Qualitative Inquiry. As for elective courses, the TESOL Track offers Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Teaching Methodology, Teaching of Reading and Writing, Language Testing and Assessment, Language Learning and Technology, and Corpus Linguistics. The EBP Track offers Business Communication Strategies, Analysis of Business Writing, Sociolinguistics, World Englishes, Discourse Analysis, Economic and Financial Translation, and Business Interpretation.
