Department Introduction

The department is a merger of the former Department of English in National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology and the former Department of Applied Foreign Languages in National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, officially approved in August, 2019. Now it has the largest undergraduate student body in the University. The department offers three bachelor’s degree programs in Applied English: 4-year program, 2-year upper division program, and 2-year in-service program for continuing education. In addition, it has two master’s degree programs: the M.A. program in Applied Linguistics and TESOL and the M.A. program in Interpreting and Translation.

The B.A. programs in Applied English emphasize the enhancement of English language proficiency and practical application, complemented by western literature and culture studies to strengthen cross-cultural competence and communication. The ESP (English for specific purposes) courses are divided into three areas: (1) Applied linguistics and English language teaching, (2) translation and interpreting, and (3) English for business communication and application. In these three areas, a number of technology application courses are offered as well. Moreover, all undergraduate students in the B.A. programs are required to study an additional foreign language and take an interdisciplinary program in order to meet the needs for multilingual talents coupled with multiple competencies from industries.
